What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide found in the connective tissue of skin, joints, and other tissue throughout the body. In skin it exists as a water-holding gel, and the amount present in the body is generally reported to decrease with age.

The hyaluronic acid used in cosmetics is mostly produced through microbial fermentation and then purified. On an ingredient label, “hyaluronic acid” is not used as a single, standalone name — it’s split into several different listed names depending on molecular weight and chemical modification.

How does it appear on an ingredient list?

These are the names you’ll typically see on a full ingredient list. Different names don’t mean unrelated ingredients with different effects — they’re variations within the same hyaluronic acid family.

Higher-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is often described as forming a thin, film-like layer on the skin’s surface that helps reduce water loss. Lower-molecular-weight and hydrolyzed forms are more often described as reaching further into the stratum corneum.

It’s hard to say one is always superior to the other. The growing number of products that combine several molecular weights reflects formulas designed to address both the surface and the deeper layers of the stratum corneum at once.

Is it okay for oily or breakout-prone skin?
